Flyball is a relay race of 4 dogs. The course consists of a starting line, 4 hurdles, and a box. The dog jumps the hurdles and steps on a spring-loaded box that shoots out a tennis ball. The dog catches the ball and runs back over the hurdles. As the dog crosses the starting line, the next dog goes. The first team to have all 4 dogs run without any errors wins the heat. Jump heights are set based on the shortest dog, with a 7" minimum and a 14" maximum jump height.
Just about any dog can do flyball if they want to. You may see any breed from the well known border collies and jack russells to bassets hounds and great danes. There are even dachshunds running now!
Once dogs learn the game, we pack them up and head off to tournaments. They can be one, two, or three day tournaments, and are A LOT of fun!
While the team is competing in a tournament, each dog is earning points towards NAFA or U-Fli flyball titles based on the team's time (in addition to team accomplishments in the tournament):
NAFA:
Less than 24 seconds - each dog receives 25 points
